VOA MUSEUM AND WEST CHESTER AMATEUR RADIO ASSOCIATION PARTICIPATE IN PI DAY

The West Chester Amateur Radio Association (WCARA) and the Voice of America Museum participated in the 2015 LAKOTA PI DAY EXHIBITION at Lakota East High School on March 20.  Pi Day events are held across the country around March 14 (3.14) every year to spark the interest of students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).  More than 1500 people attended the exhibition. The VOA booth was one of the most popular out of 50 exhibitors at the event.

Under the leadership of Joe Gruber, several members of the West Chester Amateur Radio Association developed a very popular display and interactive lessons on electricity, wave theory, magnetism and feedback loops.  Joe recruited some young high school students to be the hosts so to better relate to the kids coming by the booth. They can be seen in the pictures dressed in lab coats.

Two students race the clock with a hand-held generator to light up the “VOA Power Tower” at Pi Day + 6.  It is an arcade style game designed for kids that requires a degree of manual dexterity to win. West Chester Amateur Radio Association (WCARA) engineers at the National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting created the gadget as a "makers project" to engage kids in STEM concepts while demonstrating the innovative spirit that built VOA.
